Township, Johannesburg

This township in Johannesburg is not the kind of place where you get out of the car to sightsee. Two weekends ago, we drove in and drove right back out.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the great luxury and wealth on display in South Africa, the robust infrastructure and safety of, for example, the drinking water. This becomes interesting in contrast with townships like Alexander, where sewers are constantly over loaded because there are four times as many settlers as the place was built to accommodate.

I need to do a lot more research, but let’s just say that nothing about this situation makes me question my fundamental world view. In fact, it all seems to make a scary sort of sense. It’s not right, but it’s clear why things are like this.
